The unique feature in this game is the player being able to play almost any character present in the story chapter, not just one hero. The gameplay consists in going back and forth in time to choose which character to play at which moment; in order to modify the course of events and obtain a different ending. Each episode has a “default” ending, and several alternate endings. The tone is tragicomic.
The fact that the player may influence many characters interacting with each other led to a rather intricate narrative “tree”. This was a complex task, from the first scenario to the integration of 5-second units in the narrative editor.
As lead writer on some episodes and narrative designer, I rebuilt the entire story in the manner of a TV series and designed multi-branching scenarios, with an average of 3-4 different endings in each episode (and many variations in-between).
I wrote dialogues and characters profiles. I prepared the motion capture sessions, storyboarded the cutscenes and directed the voice actors.
As game designer I designed the telepathy mechanics allowing you to influence the characters, and the “domino effect” puzzles leading to each possible ending. I proposed new mechanics to enhance the gameplay and modernize the UI, in a way that matches the ghost story background. I corrected the level design in order to optimize the placement of the cameras and characters.
Brooklyn Stories was unfortunately cancelled by the publisher after two years of development.
